Light and Darkness

During my trip to India, I learned something that changed my inner concept of light. I looked at the darkness in that society as well as the darkness of people's skin. Light is born in darkness. First, you can't sense where light is if it is not dark. This is not about external light, but a light within objects that radiate from the inside. The light I was used to seeing in California was paper-like white sunlight washing over everything I opened my eyes. The object under this light had a clear contrast; light and darkness could be expressed using geometric lines. The light I found in India was one that permeates the darkness. It was a brightness carried inside their long history, old temples, naked dark bodies and peace. To express light, I learned that the background must be dark first.

The Theme of Yellowstone Park

I have to talk about the fish as a symbol which has long been a motif in my work. One of my biggest pleasures and great source of inspiration is walking in nature. In 1989, I visited Yellowstone Park just after large fires had devastated the Park forest--dozens of miles had turned to charcoal. It was like watching a city hit by war. Out of habit, I took out my sketchbook and drew the burned trees. text-gray-600 branches were reaching towards the sky like dead limbs; it looked as if text-gray-600 fish bones were howling up towards the sky. I instantly felt from deep inside the craving gestures of the thirsty. Later the thirsty lives turned into spiritual lights and symbolized candlelight or stars.
