Ancient River
Across
The unfolding of my imagination with the memory of my childhood at Songdo, the fisherman's village at the south end of Korea. During the Korean War (1950-1953) my family was refuged at Songdo. It was there that I saw the ocean for the first time. The great blue water and the movement of the waves surprised and held me in great awe. I constantly wondered where all that water came from, why it never stopped moving, making enormous sounds like a huge animal. After my fear gradually waned, I played on the beach everyday.

During the war, since there were no toys and children to play with, my friends were the sand, rocks, seashells and seagulls. I felt free and happy when I was surrounded by the changing colors and movement of the ocean and open sky. I had a happy childhood there for three years until my family returned to Seoul. Since then, my mother would take us to the ocean every summer.

I think the flow of my brush movement and use of wet, watery surfaces are derived from these memories. I have long tried different methods of depicting water. I found success, finally, by pouring a boldly colored bowl of water onto the surface of a canvas laid on the floor. The water would flow, making waves on it's own, painting itself. Indeed, water is painted by water, and not with my hand or a brush.'
